ITEA Conference
The ITEA conference provides the perfect combination of world-class educational sessions, networking activities and many opportunities to relax and enjoy all that Charlotte has to offer. The conference is scheduled for the perfect early spring weather and the housing at the ITEA hotels (coheadquarters Hilton and Westin) will open in the coming weeks. Both hotels are located directly across the street from the Convention Center, and Charlotte is truly a city on foot, do a lot to do in the city to go including dozens of restaurants in a four-block.
Teaching of technology
Improving the Teaching of Technology and Science The teaching of technology and science to high school and university students can be an exciting endeavor. By using an interactive, hands-on approach to education, educators can make the information accessible and retainable. Students will not only know the material for examination, but they will learn it.
Since the use of technology is popular in society, most teenagers and young adults don’t have to be forced to learn about it. However, in the instances when new material must be introduced to them, it’s best to have the technology readily available for them to use. Many educators present the information, but may not have the technology available for hands-on learning. If possible, teachers should have the equipment in the classroom, so students can be taught on the technology. The process of doing enables ownership of the material to take place.
The teaching of technology can be accomplished by arranging for students to see the equipment being used, also. For instance, having students create video footage of someone using the technology and explaining how it’s used would be more effective than just reading about the technology. Another option is to have students teach each other how to use the technology. The students would be responsible for researching the technology and learning how to use the equipment. In order for the students to pass the assignment, each group member would have to demonstrate his or her competency. The instructor would act as a resource person.
A similar approach can be taken with science. Students will learn the material better if they are responsible for teaching it. Students should be required to teach a subject to their peers in such a manner that scientific facts aren’t just being repeated, but the material becomes alive. Many educational programs have been effective in the past with edutainment approaches to teaching science. Even contemporary shows, although geared toward younger children, are quite effective in presenting scientific information so that the children understand and retain it. Some of these newer shows include Sid the Science Kid and The Dinosaur Train.
When students are actively involved and responsible for their learning experience, the material tends to remain with them beyond the examination. Educators have to move beyond just giving students facts and not an experience with the material. Essentially, the teaching of technology and science can be improved by making the material accessible through a hands-on approach, as well as making students responsible for learning and teaching the material.
